SJO & Guillermo Klein – Live Stream

After almost two years it is about time to invite the SJO guest composer and creator of the last album back on stage at the Bierhübeli. The concerts with Guillermo Klein are always new and different, because he likes to develop his work further or even bring new pieces. The collaboration with Klein is truly unique for the SJO; never before has the orchestra been able to build such a deep musical relationship with a guest musician.

He has worked for Luciana Souza, Miguel Zenon or Joshua Redman, among others, and has been leading his own top-class large formation “Los Guachos” for 25 years, which has already been documented on six albums.

More information about the Album «Swiss Jazz Orchestra & Guillermo Klein:

For the first time ever, acclaimed composer Guillermo Klein is releasing new works recorded by a band not his own – the Swiss Jazz Orchestra is a professional freelance big band founded in 2003 consisting of some of the leading Swiss musicians in jazz and beyond. The album is the SJO’s debut on Sunnyside and its 11th overall.

The collaboration with the SJO started with a couple of guest appearances by Klein as part of the band’s weekly performance series in Bern, that resulted in magical concerts. Six years after its last studio effort, the orchestra chose Klein to be the composer of their next outing.

Klein, motivated by the band’s dedication and collective spirit and inspired by the beauty and history of the city of Bern, has written an intriguing program with the sound of the band and its individual members in mind.

On the 13 cuts, Klein and the SJO impose on the listener a challenging array of complex emotions. From the solemn lament of the opening theme of Riqueza Abandonada to the glaring desperation of Paredón, incorporating musical realms as varied as the blues (Patent Office (Ibernia), Manuel), earthy grooves (Lepo) and etheral vamps (Córdoba, Zytglogge II), Klein covers a lot of ground while always being unmistakably himself.

Throughout the musical journey, one can easily identify some of Klein’s influences such as Duke Ellington, Gil Evans or Steve Reich, as well as his Argentinian roots. He makes great use of the sonic possibilities with muted brass, flutes and clarinets as well as the tuba, and the orchestra’s excellent soloists are given ample space, too.
