SJO & Ralph Alessi – Livestream (EN)
The trumpet player and composer comes from a family of classical musicians in San Francisco, where he studied under Charlie Haden. A fearless and imaginative improviser, he was hired by Steve Coleman and Sam Rivers, among others, and established himself in the scene around Jason Moran, Uri Caine, Ravi Coltrane and Fred Hersch. Most recently, he has focused on quartet and quintet settings, releasing music on the prestigious ECM label, but the SJO also presents his works exclusively for big band. Alessi is a phenomenally independent master of the trumpet, but also a passionate educator; he has founded an independent improvisation school in Brooklyn, taught at various U.S. universities, and has been a professor at the Hochschule der Künste Bern since 2020.
